Wilkins Ice Shelf: Old, Inaccurate News

In the event you didn’t HEAR the ASS-ociated Press when they published this SAME STORY a few weeks ago, here it is again—the Wilkins Ice Shelf fear piece. Make sure you digest this along with the “swine” flu fear mongering that’s rampant in the news right now. Speaking of the swine flu, I wonder when the first lunatic will come out and say that global warming is the cause. I’m sure we won’t have to wait for long.

This particular article, however, is chock full of little delights that are ripe for analysis and digestion. First, just as with the previous article, they fail to mention that the EASTERN ANTARCTIC’S ICE HAS GROWN, such that the total continental ice has increased, even with this western portion breaking up (this is what happens in the spring and summer anyway).

Next, they’re finally admitting HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME that this ice breaking and melting WILL NOT raise sea levels. Yay! Let’s hear it for small victories.

Last, they’re admitting that all this scrutiny of the ice has been made possible by these new satellite images—as he says ‘for the first time…we can see the demise of the ice shelf.’ What that tells me is that the previous billions of years in Earth’s history could have had this situation occur and we wouldn’t have known about it. So should we just accept, given this one time in the billions of years of Earth’s history in which we happen to be paying attention, that it is a first occurrence?!? Again, this question is elementary for any first-year statistics student in college. The answer is no, you should not accept such an assertion.

Antarctic Ice Shelf Beginning to Break Up

BERLIN — Massive ice chunks are crumbling away from a shelf in the western Antarctic Peninsula, researchers said Wednesday, warning that 1,300 square miles of ice — an area larger than Rhode Island — was in danger of breaking off in coming weeks.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf had been stable for most of the last century, but began retreating in the 1990s. Researchers believe it was held in place by an ice bridge linking Charcot Island to the Antarctic mainland.

***

"There is little doubt that these changes are the result of atmospheric warming," said David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey.

The falling away of Antarctic ice shelves does not, in itself, raise sea levels, since the ice was already floating in the sea.

***

Researchers said the quality and frequency of the ESA satellite images have allowed them to analyze the Wilkins shelf breakup far more effectively than any previous event.

"For the first time, I think, we can really begin to see the processes that have brought about the demise of the ice shelf," Vaughan said.

Antarctic Melting? Not So Fast!

Ice melt fears feature prominently in the empirical arguments of global warming alarmists. However, as shown time and again on this blog and others, they’re full of crap.

Now comes a story from the Australian News.com which puts this fear-mongering into perspective. The Wilkins Ice Shelf in the Western Antarctic was alarmingly trumpeted in the news recently for its apparent melting, but the same article made no comment on the Eastern Antarctic WHICH IS GROWING. Once again, the media tries to spin stories by the facts they leave out—same continent with two different stories, and which side does the media jump on? The one that points to warming, of course. The story is the same in the Arctic; ice is getting thicker, not shrinking like some media stories have asserted and predicted.

In reality, the Antarctic Continent is cooling as a whole. But the EPA and other like-minded environmentalist fruitcakes and opportunists only have so much time remaining to get the maximum socialist benefit out of this scam.

Antarctic ice is growing, not melting away

Ice is expanding in much of Antarctica, contrary to the widespread public belief that global warming is melting the continental ice cap.

The results of ice-core drilling and sea ice monitoring indicate there is no large-scale melting of ice over most of Antarctica, although experts are concerned at ice losses on the continent's western coast.

Antarctica has 90 percent of the Earth's ice and 80 percent of its fresh water, The Australian reports. Extensive melting of Antarctic ice sheets would be required to raise sea levels substantially, and ice is melting in parts of west Antarctica. The destabilization of the Wilkins ice shelf generated international headlines this month.

GASP!: Melting, Collapsing Ice, I Say!!!

The oft-appearing melting-collapsing ice fear tactic. According to the alarmist researchers (who were recently stranded from all the cold at the North Pole), this prediction will come to pass in 100 or more years, far after your death, as a result of what you’re doing right now: being a capitalist. You won’t be around to say whether they were right or not, and neither will they.

Remember, even partially submerged ice displaces water (Archimedes’ Principle); don’t believe all the fear you read. Since we’re all making predictions, let me say that I believe that it’s LIKELY that the ice sheet WON’T collapse in your lifetime or even in hundreds of generations from now, because pontificators of future doom have been notoriously wrong in human history.

The climate varies naturally over time—it’s more like a waveform than a flat-line.

Still need to be afraid? Read the GASP! series and the warmlist to let the media whip you into a fear frenzy.

Antarctic Ice Sheet Likely to Collapse, New Data Show

WASHINGTON — New information on Antarctica's regularly melting distant past is giving scientists a glimpse into what may be a flooded future as the planet warms up.

The West Antarctic ice sheet collapsed periodically between 3 million and 5 million years ago, adding more than 16 feet to global sea level, according to the first examination of soil cores far below the surface of the Ross ice shelf.

Also, new computer models suggest that warmer waters nearby attacked the ice from below, triggering those collapses.

Both findings appear in studies published Thursday in the journal Nature.

"What we're seeing in the past would lead us to believe that we are on track for losing parts of the West Antarctic ice sheet," said Tim Naish, director of the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University in New Zealand and leader of the study that looked at dirt cores.

Antarctic volcanoes causing glacier thinning?

AntarcticaAntarctic volcanoes identified as a possible culprit in glacier melting - International Herald Tribune:

Another factor might be contributing to the thinning of some of the Antarctica's glaciers: volcanoes.

In an article published Sunday on the Web site of the journal Nature Geoscience, Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey report the identification of a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards frozen within an ice sheet in western Antarctica.

"This is the first time we have seen a volcano beneath the ice sheet punch a hole through the ice sheet" in Antarctica, Vaughan said.

Of course, the implications of this article couldn't be left alone by the author; grasping conjecture had to be inserted at some point, for later we see:
Volcanic heat could still be melting ice to water and contributing to thinning and speeding up of the Pine Island glacier, which passes nearby, but Vaughan said he doubted that it could be affecting other glaciers in western Antarctica, which have also thinned in recent years.
So, one can see how a disclaimer was put in to still allow for man-made climate change!

Absolute iceberg malarkey

For the fearmongering and alarmist portions of the article, please follow the link and read it for yourself. I've highlighted the disclaimer portions below (my emphasis in bold), whereby the author is letting loose little facts that actually detract from the fear this story is meant to instill in you (because of your greenhouse gas emissions, loser).

These collapses happen. They ARE NOT PROOF that human-emitted CO2 is causing the earth to warm. Don't let them snow you, so to speak.

Now, look here to see where ice is reforming. Note how they're still not wanting to admit that the new ice means anything.

Pressdemo.com Headlines | Western Antarctic Ice Chunk Collapses:

While icebergs naturally break away from the mainland, collapses like this are unusual but are happening more frequently in recent decades, Vaughan said. The collapse is similar to what happens to hardened glass when it is smashed with a hammer, he said.

Climate in Antarctica is complicated and more isolated from the rest of the world.

Much of the continent is not warming and some parts are even cooling, Vaughan said. However, the western peninsula, which includes the Wilkins ice shelf, juts out into the ocean and is warming. This is the part of the continent where scientists are most concern about ice-melt triggering sea level rise.

Here's Reuter's version, which is even more preposterous. Note the huge leap he makes in the last paragraph; they're watching ice break up, and that's all. They HAVE NOT IN ANY WAY TIED THIS TO GREENHOUSE GASES. A high school science student could recognize what an abysmal bit of reaching that is in terms of the scientific method. PUH-LEEEZZZZEEE!!! Again, this is empirical evidence, and empirical evidence pointing in the other direction is always ignored or sited as proof of manmade climate change (i.e., record cold and snow THIS VERY WINTER ACROSS THE WORLD). Let's also not forget this unfortunate fact--the earth has cooled FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS, while CO2 levels have reportedly continued rising; why are these "geniuses" ignoring this?

If he has to say it has been in place for "at least a few hundred years," does that mean he knows for sure? And if so, how did it form before 200 years ago. Can it form again? Scam-bos is a good name for this guy. The NYT is giving its opinion too, so I'll be watching the Wilkins ice shelf carefully, even though they admit in the editorial it will reform due to the winter that's now starting...which is funny, because it means it just broke up during a seasonally warmer period?!

Slab of Antarctic ice shelf collapses amid warming | Reuters
:

"One corner of it that's exposed to the ocean is shattering in a pattern that we've seen in a few places over the past 10 or 15 years. In every case, we've eventually concluded that it's a result of climate warming," Scambos added.

Scambos said this ice shelf has been in place for at least a few hundred years, but warm air and exposure to ocean waves are causing a breakup.

"The warming that's going on in the peninsula is pretty clearly tied to greenhouse gas increases and the change that they have in the atmospheric circulation around the Antarctic," Scambos said.

Why You Should Question "Consensus" Scientists

So, "consensus" scientists' theories are unassailable, eh? No debating the undebateable? In this story, we see that scientists were shocked that any creature could live below 600 feet of ice in the Antarctic; this flew in the face of accepted, "consensus" opinion that only certain microbes were hearty enough to exist in such cold conditions. Just read the quote from Dr. Kim below for yourself.

If "consensus" scientists can be wrong about life in the Antarctic, the next question you should ask yourself is, "Could they be wrong about carbon's role in the climate?" Because they ARE WRONG.

Yes, Dr. Kim and Dr. Bindschadler. You guys think you know EVERYTHING (your quote), but YOU DO NOT. And what scientific team produced this bit of news? NASA, of course...the same organization that brings you the unquestionable Dr. James Hansen and his flawed global warming theories.

WASHINGTON -- In a surprising discovery about where higher life can thrive, scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet.

Six hundred feet below the ice where no light shines, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes could exist.

That is why a team from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp-like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera's cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle they believe came from a foot-long jellyfish.

***

"It's pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything," Kim said.

GASP!: Ice Shelf Breaking Away

The AP is back at it, this time with the semiannual to annually recurring ‘ice chunk breaking away due to global warming’ story. Instead of focusing like the recent previous story did on the Arctic, this one moves to the South Pole.

I guess they will keep this up until we doubters are worn down from the sheer volume of misinformation, but I don’t see any hope of that happening. I will fight this mass stupidity until I no longer breathe.

There is no end to the ice melting, ice breaking, ice cracking, ice floating, and associated coastal flooding news stories out there to stoke your climate terror. Last summer, they told us that the North Pole would melt away completely…and it didn’t happen. Another failed fear-evoking prediction. Check the GASP! series and the warmlist for more AGW-related fear.

Massive Ice Shelf About to Break Away From Antarctic Coast

PARIS — A massive ice shelf anchored to the Antarctic coast by a narrow and quickly deteriorating ice bridge could break away soon, the European Space Agency warned Friday.

The Paris-based agency said satellite images show the bridge that connects the Wilkins Ice Shelf to Charcot and Latady Islands "looks set to collapse."

"The beginning of what appears to be the demise of the ice bridge began this week when new rifts" appeared and a large block of ice broke away, it said.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf — which like the rest of Antarctic's ice sheet "was formed by thousands of years of accumulated and compacted snow" — had been stable for most of the last century before it began retreating in the 1990s, the statement said.

N.H. snowfall nearing all-time record...IN LATE MARCH!

While icebergs are breaking apart and killing seals, winter in America (and most of the rest of the flat earth) threatens to continue into April. The story below is from March 28, 2008.

Again, if you consider empirical evidence like crumbling ice in the Antarctic, you also must consider the voluminous stories about the winter this year that erased 100 years of "warming" in one season!

N.H. snowfall now 3rd in all-time list - USATODAY.com:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Today's snow has moved New Hampshire up a notch in the list of all-time snowy winters, making this the snowiest winter in 135 years.

The National Weather Service says that as of 7 a.m., an inch of snow had fallen in Concord from the latest storm. That inch moved the state into third place for all-time snowfall, at 113.4 inches. It hasn't snowed this much since the winter of 1872-73.

While seals continue "dying" in the Antarctic due to AGW-created melting ice, seal hunters in Canada have a different, opposing problem. Huh?

Thick ice hinders Canada's controversial seal hunt | Environment | Reuters:

CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island (Reuters) - Canada's annual seal hunt, which the government promised would be more humane this year, cranked up slowly on Friday because of thick ice.

The government is allowing hunters to kill up to 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off Eastern Canada, but only three had been reported killed on the first morning of the hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

"It's a very slow start," said Phil Jenkins, spokesman for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, noting that sealing boats were finding it difficult to get to the herds because of thick ice.

GASP!: Ice “hanging by a thread!”

FearBefore I do the usual work of ripping this fear piece apart with fact, scientific reasoning, and cold logic, please notice the hysteria and hyperbole of the headline itself. We see these stories every few weeks in the environmentally-ignorant, agenda-driven media. Here was a similar piece where we saw that ice melts in the Arctic are "receding like mad." Then we always see antithetical stories where the ice isn’t as bad as once thought, and then we see counter-stories from the media believers that proclaim “newly-formed ice” isn’t as good as “old ice.” And on it goes...the usual media fear templates that are on the circular conveyor: ice is melting, hurricanes are strengthening, floods are growing, fire is raging, animals are going extinct, tornados are forming, diseases are expanding, and on it goes. FEAR, DOOM, DOOM, DOOOOOOMMM!!!! And it’s all a bunch of baloney. You can read the extensive list of silly “global warming results” on the warmlist; check that list out and ask yourself if the media’s campaign is ridiculous or not. The GASP! series illustrates the extent of the media’s propaganda campaign too—check it out.

And the common thread connecting ice stories is that these glaciers and ice fields are being monitored for changes by satellites year-to-year, and how long have satellites been circling (or stationary) up there, compared to the age of the Earth? Are we making inane proclamations based on statistically-flawed comparisons?

Our “measurements” of ice obtained from satellites compared to records of the same ice over a statistically-acceptable length of time are truly impossible to verify as incontrovertible; the baseline of time is too small compared to the Earth’s total age. In other words, WE’RE INCORRECTLY MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE EARTH BASED ON A RIDICULOUSLY TINY SPAN OF TIME. Satellites have been used for 40 or so years, and satellites that are good enough to “measure” ice have been up there for how long? I’d wager far less than 40 years.

A good analogy to what they’re doing would be to observe a single nanosecond of one year, noticing that at that exact nanosecond the wind changed from 5 mph to 10 mph, and then concluding that our world will obviously be destroyed by this scary doubling in wind speed, if the “trend in acceleration” continues unabated!!! For you alarmist psychos who aren’t savvy enough to follow the allegory, I’m saying that a nanosecond taken out of a year as a period of observation is STATISTICALLY TOO DAMN SMALL to draw silly, far reaching conclusions; a nanosecond is one-billionth of a second, and there are a hell of a lot of nanoseconds in a day, much less a year (5.256 x 10^14 nanoseconds in one year to be exact). Well, taking 30 years of observations (even if they can be shown to be absolutely accurate and unassailable) out of the 4.5 billion years that the Earth has existed (meaning that you’re missing 150 million similar periods of observation), and making bold climate proclamations of doom based on that very small span (30 years out of 4.5 billion years) is similarly retarded. I can’t understand for the life of me how someone in the media hasn’t caught on to this silliness yet, though some have in a few places.

Notice how they make the claim that the ice has been stable “most of the last century.” Really? We see it breaking up now with satellites, but we know with certainty the same ice NOT OBSERVED BY SATELLITES was stable for the last century? Are you laughing yet? You should be...

My guess is that they know about the statistical and scientific problems with their claims, but the myth and boondoggle must be propped up at all costs. Too many reputations are at stake now after all the prophecies of doom, as is the money and power to be acquired from dealing with this new “crisis.” Government and political hacks need crises to remain relevant; they want us to believe that we can’t get by without them and their intercession in our lives.

Antarctic ice shelf 'hanging by thread': European scientists

New evidence has emerged that a large plate of floating ice shelf attached to Antarctica is breaking up, in a troubling sign of global warming, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Thursday.

Images taken by its Envisat remote-sensing satellite show that Wilkins Ice Shelf is "hanging by its last thread" to Charcot Island, one of the plate's key anchors to the Antarctic peninsula, ESA said in a press release.

"Since the connection to the island... helps stabilise the ice shelf, it is likely the breakup of the bridge will put the remainder of the ice shelf at risk," it said.

Wilkins Ice Shelf had been stable for most of the last century, covering around 16,000 square kilometres (6,000 square miles), or about the size of Northern Ireland, before it began to retreat in the 1990s.

Since then several large areas have broken away, and two big breakoffs this year left only a narrow ice bridge about 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) wide to connect the shelf to Charcot and nearby Latady Island.

Recent climate-related headlines

Just a few more recent, telling articles that relate to climate change, packaged together here for your reading pleasure.

China battles "coldest winter in 100 years"| Reuters
:

CHENZHOU, China, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Millions remained stranded in China on Monday ahead of the biggest holiday of the year as parts of the country suffered their coldest winter in a century.

Freezing weather has killed scores of people and left travellers stranded before the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival -- the only opportunity many people have to take a holiday all year.

J'lem experiences second snow of '08 | Jerusalem Post :
Dozens of snowplows and tractors, and 34 tons of salt stood ready in Jerusalem to battle the snowstorm that began on Monday night, which is the second one to blanket the capital this year.

By evening the bright sunshine had turned into driving rain and strong winds. A bit after dark, the flakes began falling. Forecasters said that snow could cover areas as far south as Mitzpe Ramon in the Negev.

The Associated Press: 3 Dead As Snow Hits Texas Panhandle:
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A snowstorm hit the Texas Panhandle early Thursday, leaving at least three people dead and causing a 40-vehicle pileup that shut down an interstate for several hours, officials said.

One person was killed and at least two were injured in the pileup caused by blowing snow that limited visibility and slick, icy spots that made Interstate 40 treacherous, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Wayne Beighle said.

The Associated Press: Warmer Atlantic Worsens Hurricanes:
WASHINGTON (AP) — When the water in the hurricane breeding grounds of the Atlantic warms one degree in the dead of summer, overall hurricane activity jumps by half, according to a new study.

Scientists have long known that hurricanes get their enormous energy from warm waters, so the warmer the water, the more fuel a storm has to either start up or get stronger. The study calculates how much storm frequency and strength is due to warmer sea water, said author Mark Saunders, professor of climate prediction at the University College London.

Right! That's why the past few hurricane seasons (predicted to be looming disasters) have been a complete bust. Drop the Al Gore schtick already. An article a few days earlier said this...

The Associated Press: Forecasters Debate Hurricanes, Warming:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A lively and sometimes scrappy debate on whether global warming is fueling bigger and nastier hurricanes like Katrina is adding an edge to a gathering of forecasters here.

The venue for the 88th annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society could not have been more conducive to the discussion: The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is where thousands of people waited for days during the storm to be evacuated from a city drowning in water and misery.

'60 Minutes' Preempted This Sunday for Global Warming Hysteria | NewsBusters.org:
This teaser raises many important questions. For instance, will even one of the over 400 scientists that don't believe man is responsible for global warming be interviewed by Pelley? Or, will he exclusively talk to folks that are involved in advancing this yet unproven theory?

Will any of the scientific studies concerning historical ice levels in the Arctic and the Antarctic be sited, or just the satellite data for the past thirty years?

Assuming the top NASA scientist Pelley will be speaking to is the controversial head of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies James Hansen, will he be asked about his connection to George Soros? Or that the GISS predicted an ice age back in 1971? Or that Hansen's organization made a huge error in calculating temperatures this decade that was uncovered by Climate Audit's Stephen McIntyre?

LOL: Reduce UK Population by 50% to Fight Warming

If this isn’t beginning to convince the thinkers among you that we’ve all been fed a giant lie then I don’t know what will convince you. Another in the long line of ridiculous "solutions." Slow the economy and tax wealth. Cut the population. These all sound like the slogans of the proletariat in preparation to slaughter the bourgeoisie; it could be China, it could be Soviet Russia. That’s because this is socialism versus capitalism at its very heart—it’s merely disguised as environmentalism to save the planet.

UK population must fall to 30m, says Porritt

JONATHON PORRITT, one of Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society.

Porritt’s call will come at this week’s annual conference of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT), of which he is patron.

The trust will release research suggesting UK population must be cut to 30m if the country wants to feed itself sustainably.

Porritt said: “Population growth, plus economic growth, is putting the world under terrible pressure.

More Irony: New Obama Climate Service Postponed by Blizzard

Poetic justice continues to pile-on the alarmists and global warming believers out there, even amidst all the empirical data and fraud evidence to the contrary. Thulsa Doom Obama, refusing to acknowledge recent record-setting cold or climate scandal after climate scandal, is sticking to the party-line: Man’s use of fossil fuels (capitalism) is heating up the world. What would you expect from a Marxist like Obama and his Comrades?

Of course, Mother Nature and TRUTH get the last words. Sorry, TD Obama.

So, this schmuck alarmist in the article is going to teach us ‘children’ the difference between climate and weather. Sorry, but the weather reflects the climate. After all, their version of climate equals warmer temperatures that drive empirical changes in weather. But when the empirical part doesn’t fit their template (like all these blizzards), they poo-poo it away and lecture us for not knowing the difference between climate and weather. Or they’ll claim that warming causes the observed cooling; or they’ll claim that La Nina is masking warming.

This is what I call climate revisionism. If there’s a heat wave, hurricane, or if a chunk of ice melts somewhere in the Antarctic, however (even when it doesn’t really happen as recent scandals have shown), they’re quick to jump up and say, “See, see? Global warming!!!” The opposite empirical evidence results in all sorts of hysterical contortions on the part of alarmists, like this lecture on ‘climate’ versus ‘weather.’

As D.C. continued to dig out from Snowmageddon and is keeping an eye on another storm system, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was busy making a climate change announcement.

NOAA, part of the Department of Commerce, is going to be providing information to individuals and decision-makers through a new NOAA Climate Service office. “More and more, Americans are witnessing the impacts of climate change in their own backyards, including sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters. People are searching for relevant and timely information about these changes to inform decision-making about virtually all aspects of their lives,” the release says.

Earlier snowmelt? That would be nice.

Turns out the release was planned prepared ahead of the snowstorm, which shut federal agencies today and forced its senders to hold a press conference by telephone instead of at the National Press Club.

POTUS BHO Continues Climate Push

Looks like our lord and savior--who while in Turkey recently decided to AGAIN refer to himself as “Barack HUSSEIN Obama” in order to make points with Muslims who hate us--is not going to stop pushing this ridiculous climate change BS. I hope Americans are waking up out there and sensing the seizure of power and wealth that is occurring with this “new government of hope.” “YES HE CAN” take your money and do with it what he will. Yes he can fire the President of GM. When you’re the lord and savior and can lean back on ‘fixing what the previous administration did’ every 5 seconds, you can get away with a lot.

The truth is that he knows Americans—even those in his own party—will eventually balk. That’s why he’s been trying to get so much done in such a short period of time. The grace period only lasts so long.

He’s correct below. Americans will eventually resist this stupidity; it is going to be hard, and I pray that his climate policies do not succeed. Meanwhile, it’s still winter in the Midwest with heavy snow falling…in April! Contrast that with the portents of doom at the Arctic and Antarctic.

Obama Touts U.S. Participation in Global Talks on Climate Change

President Obama on Tuesday laid out his intentions for sweeping changes in how Americans use energy, conceding it will not be easy or popular, but noting that he wants the U.S. to participate in talks on the successor to the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol.

President Obama on Tuesday laid out his intentions for sweeping changes in how Americans use energy, conceding it will not be easy or popular, but noting that he wants the U.S. to participate in talks on the successor to the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol.

Obama conceded that it will be costly as well as difficult to get the U.S. Congress to tax all carbon emissions from power plants and refineries -- part of a long term plan to cap the total amount of carbon emissions, then impose steady reductions over time. The problem, as the president said, is that plan would force American factories and utilities to engage in massive and expensive changes.

"If you say to a power plant, you have to produce energy in a different way, and that costs them money, then they want to pass that cost on to consumers, which means everybody's electricity prices go up -- and that is something that is not very popular," he said.

GASP!: Melting Greenland to Flood U.S. Cities

It had been a few weeks, so they decided to throw another ice-melt-flooding-coastal-areas fear story out there. The pattern is that the media alternates talking about Greenland's melting ice sheet (which IS NOT melting), the Arctic, the Antarctic, and glaciers. If they repeat this ice-melt tripe enough, they figure you'll give in and think you've always known this hogwash to be true.

Now, I'll repeat my prediction, since they KEEP REPEATING theirs. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO U.S. CITIES IF WE DO NOTHING! Case closed. There is ZERO global warming happening as a result of increased CO2.

Check the GASP! series and Dr. Brignell's warmlist for more tall tales...if you like horror movies.

Greenland ice could fuel severe U.S. sea level rise

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New York, Boston and other cities on North America's northeast coast could face a rise in sea level this century that would exceed forecasts for the rest of the planet if Greenland's ice sheet keeps melting as fast as it is now, researchers said on Wednesday.

Sea levels off the northeast coast of North America could rise by 12 to 20 inches more than other coastal areas if the Greenland glacier-melt continues to accelerate at its present pace, the researchers reported.

Cold causes giant Antarctic marine life

Notice first how they state (about midway through the article) that they're studying stuff down there because of "global warming." But then we see the theory that these huge critters are that way because of the cold.

So are they saying we're killing them off (probably), or are they saying they're going to shrink (LOL)?

If they're REAL scientists, I hope they'll be brave enough to admit when their research shows them that global warming is an unequivocal load of crap. But since I'm sure they're enjoying the research dollars coming in, don't look for "climate change" to go away any time soon.

Global warming is the "snake oil" of the new millennium.

The Associated Press: Giant Marine Life Found in Antarctica:

The survey was part of the International Polar Year program involving 23 countries in 11 voyages to survey marine life and habitats around Antarctica. The program hopes to set benchmarks for determining the effects of global warming on Antarctica, researchers said.

Cold temperatures, a small number of predators, high levels of oxygen in the sea water and even longevity could explain the size of some specimens, said Robertson, a scientist with NIWA.

AGW is degrading the icy Southern Ocean?

Latest round of baloney, where activist reporters find ways to sneak in the words "global warming." There are a few problems, however. First, AGW is supposed to be extinguishing species--not making it possible to discover new ones. Secondly, wouldn't "degradation" (meaning "melting ice in Antarctica") make it possible to discover more of what's living there? Or would it be destroying the habitat of these new creatures, and by proxy, exterminating them?

Come on, people of the Earth. Think. Use your brains. Don't just give in to these propagandists!

AFP: Antarctic census set to reveal new species: scientists:

Researchers from the Australian, French and Japanese venture designed to complete a census of marine life in the icy Southern Ocean before it is degraded by global warming, have brought thousands of specimens back.

GASP!: We're Done For in Y3K

Even after all the empirical and actual evidence (not to mention scandals), the elitist kooks out there--propagandizing under a veil they call "science"--refuse to acknowledge that their little demonize-CO2 escapade has failed. No one--except for liberal elitists--is falling for the BS any longer.

This blog has covered numerous dire climate predictions in just three short years, ranging from 18 months (Prince Charles) to now 1000 years. Of course, we've seen that the dingbat known as Prince Charles was proven wrong so early that he had to modify his 18-month prediction a few times; I have no idea upon what authority he feels he can make predictions and be taken seriously...but the media sure takes him seriously.

But there have been many predictions from so-called knowledgeable scientists. So, who's right? Which one of these geniuses do we believe? Are Americans really this stupid? Our history is full of idiot religious leaders prophesying the end times, which never came to pass. In my opinion, there's no difference between these religious zealots and the climate zealots. Climate change is the new religion, and it DEMANDS faith from its followers.

Even if humans stop producing excess carbon dioxide in 2100, the lingering effects of global warming could span the next millennia. The results? By the year 3000, global warming would be more than a hot topic - the West Antarctic ice sheet could collapse, and global sea levels would rise by about 13 feet (4 meters), according to a new study.

Using a computer model, researchers looked at two scenarios - an end to humans' industrial carbon dioxide emissions by 2010 and by 2100 - stretched out to the year 3000.

Even if humans were to stop emitting excess carbon dioxide - or if they figured out a way to completely capture it - the effects of global warming would continue to accumulate. That's because previously emitted carbon dioxide lingers in the atmosphere and the oceans, unlike land, warm only gradually, according to one of the study researchers, Shawn Marshall, an associate professor of geography at the University of Calgary.

Russians evacuate melting ice chunk

Talk about a far-reaching claim! These guys decided to pitch a tent on a floating chunk of ice in September of last year (as we started to have that record cold season we weren't supposed to have), and now they’re surprised the ice chunk is melting in the midst of summer? Notice that they were going to evacuate it anyway. Why? Because IT WAS GOING TO MELT ANYWAY! Very deceptive, these alarmist-advocates.

That last sentence is just retarded. I don’t know how these morons transcend the considerable gulf between “melting ice in July” and “global warming.” Yes, warmth melts ice, but relative warmth is normal in the Arctic at this time of year. Therefore, more warmth equals less ice. Duh! The question: is CO2 causing the warming that's melting the ice? No. The summer is causing the warming that's melting the ice!

I predicted that the alarmists would take the normal heat of summer and turn it into the global warming boogeyman; it’s opportunism at its finest. It’s easier for the advocates to convince the sheep that there’s manmade global warming when it’s actually warm outside due to summer...especially when ice melts.

Scientists Evacuate Research Station Built on Ice Due to Global Warming

MOSCOW — Russian scientists are evacuating a research station built on an Arctic ice floe because global warming has melted the ice to a fraction of its original size, a spokesman said.

The North Pole-35 station, where 21 researchers and two dogs live in huts, will be taken off the floe in the western Arctic Ocean this week instead of in late August as originally planned, said Sergei Balyasnikov of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

The research crew landed in early September on the 1.2- by 2.5-mile floe near the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. During its westward drift of more than 1,550 miles, the floe shrank to just 1,000 by 2,000 feet.

"The evacuation is ahead of schedule because of global warming," Balyasnikov said.

Sleeping Sun Baffles Dimwits

The quiet sun may be baffling astronomers, but the climate change believers (ahem…fear mongers) among them haven’t been baffled into changing their silly stances on the climate. Yes, the sun has cooled, as has the solar system. And so has our climate. For the past 11 years the global mean temperature on Earth has cooled gradually, mirroring the quiescence of solar energy. If you believe the baseline established by climate psychos (and that 1998 was our ‘hottest’ year), this hard data can’t be ignored, though everyone seems to be doing just that.

Empirical evidence since Hurricane Katrina has accumulated to the point of generating no end of revisionist statements from alarmist camps—from La Nina’s “masking” of warming to this article’s assertion: The sun’s cooling is also masking Earth’s warming, not contributing to the observed cooling. Hurricanes have simply dropped off the radar in comparison to the predictions blasted by Gore and others like him. We’ve had two record winters in a row, with snow storms continuing into this April. The ice melts heralded as ‘horrible’ in the Arctic and Antarctic were exposed as the fear tactics that they are.

This is quite silly to behold, but I guess few seem willing to think their way out of this paper bag into which the media and their manipulators have scooped them. Too many goofy looking, ugly, expensive light bulbs need to be sold. Obama’s dumb, expensive, intrusive climate plans need to be enacted. Scientific and political reputations must be salvaged. Many doubting scientists continue to keep quiet rather than risk evisceration by their colleagues. Too much rests on the continuation of this lie for anyone to admit they are wrong.

I’m sorry to tell this chap what he’s ignoring—the Earth’s global temperature “rise” has already reversed (for more than a decade), and the empirical evidence (and scientific data) continues trumpeting a tune that he prefers not to hear: There is NO GLOBAL WARMING AS A RESULT OF CO2. There never was and there never will be.

'Quiet Sun' baffling astronomers

Last year, it was expected that it would have been hotting up after a quiet spell. But instead it hit a 50-year year low in solar wind pressure, a 55-year low in radio emissions, and a 100-year low in sunspot activity.

According to Prof Louise Hara of University College London, it is unclear why this is happening or when the Sun is likely to become more active again.

"Others are suggesting we'll be going into another minimum period - this is a big scientific debate at the moment."

***

In the mid-17th Century, a quiet spell - known as the Maunder Minimum - lasted 70 years, and led to a "mini ice-age".

This has resulted in some people suggesting that a similar cooling might offset the impact of climate change.

***

He added that the current slight dimming of the Sun is not going to reverse the rise in global temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

"What we are seeing is consistent with a global temperature rise, not that the Sun is coming to our aid."

Cold Snap Kills Amazon Fish

This would be empirical evidence that should point away from global warming, but the alarmists will use it as proof of "manmade climate change," while antithetical warm snaps here and there are strictly attributed to anthropogenic global warming. Neat little scam. All weird weather (which has always happened) is our fault.

Antarctic cold snap kills millions of aquatic animals in the Amazon.

The San Julián fish farm in the Santa Cruz department of Bolivia lost 15 tonnes of pacú fish in the extreme cold.Never Tejerina

With high Andean peaks and a humid tropical forest, Bolivia is a country of ecological extremes. But during the Southern Hemisphere's recent winter, unusually low temperatures in part of the country's tropical region hit freshwater species hard, killing an estimated 6 million fish and thousands of alligators, turtles and river dolphins.
