It's the Sun, Stupid

A frank admission. Surely it's liberal policies and solutions that are moderating the temperatures by reducing greenhouse gases...it can't be the sun!

But the sun's recent activity, or lack thereof, may be linked to the pleasant summer temperatures the midwest has enjoyed this year, said Charlie Perry, a research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Lawrence.

Solar Cycle Down--Temps Lower

Is it the sun, stupid? I contend it is. We’ve seen gradual cooling over the past 11 years (given the 1998 baseline called the “highest ever” by warming proponents), and the last few years has witnessed a fairly sharp declination in temperature. Mirroring the falling global mean temperature on Earth is an identical failing temperature on other solar system bodies and a record decrease in sunspots.

And yet, no scientists or media types seem willing to put 2 and 2 together. That’s because 2 and 2 make 5 when you’re a political opportunist.

New Solar Cycle Prediction

May 29, 2009: An international panel of experts led by NOAA and sponsored by NASA has released a new prediction for the next solar cycle. Solar Cycle 24 will peak, they say, in May 2013 with a below-average number of sunspots.

"If our prediction is correct, Solar Cycle 24 will have a peak sunspot number of 90, the lowest of any cycle since 1928 when Solar Cycle 16 peaked at 78," says panel chairman Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center.

Sleeping Sun Baffles Dimwits

The quiet sun may be baffling astronomers, but the climate change believers (ahem…fear mongers) among them haven’t been baffled into changing their silly stances on the climate. Yes, the sun has cooled, as has the solar system. And so has our climate. For the past 11 years the global mean temperature on Earth has cooled gradually, mirroring the quiescence of solar energy. If you believe the baseline established by climate psychos (and that 1998 was our ‘hottest’ year), this hard data can’t be ignored, though everyone seems to be doing just that.

Empirical evidence since Hurricane Katrina has accumulated to the point of generating no end of revisionist statements from alarmist camps—from La Nina’s “masking” of warming to this article’s assertion: The sun’s cooling is also masking Earth’s warming, not contributing to the observed cooling. Hurricanes have simply dropped off the radar in comparison to the predictions blasted by Gore and others like him. We’ve had two record winters in a row, with snow storms continuing into this April. The ice melts heralded as ‘horrible’ in the Arctic and Antarctic were exposed as the fear tactics that they are.

This is quite silly to behold, but I guess few seem willing to think their way out of this paper bag into which the media and their manipulators have scooped them. Too many goofy looking, ugly, expensive light bulbs need to be sold. Obama’s dumb, expensive, intrusive climate plans need to be enacted. Scientific and political reputations must be salvaged. Many doubting scientists continue to keep quiet rather than risk evisceration by their colleagues. Too much rests on the continuation of this lie for anyone to admit they are wrong.

I’m sorry to tell this chap what he’s ignoring—the Earth’s global temperature “rise” has already reversed (for more than a decade), and the empirical evidence (and scientific data) continues trumpeting a tune that he prefers not to hear: There is NO GLOBAL WARMING AS A RESULT OF CO2. There never was and there never will be.

'Quiet Sun' baffling astronomers

Last year, it was expected that it would have been hotting up after a quiet spell. But instead it hit a 50-year year low in solar wind pressure, a 55-year low in radio emissions, and a 100-year low in sunspot activity.

According to Prof Louise Hara of University College London, it is unclear why this is happening or when the Sun is likely to become more active again.

***

"Others are suggesting we'll be going into another minimum period - this is a big scientific debate at the moment."

***

In the mid-17th Century, a quiet spell - known as the Maunder Minimum - lasted 70 years, and led to a "mini ice-age".

This has resulted in some people suggesting that a similar cooling might offset the impact of climate change.

***

He added that the current slight dimming of the Sun is not going to reverse the rise in global temperatures caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

"What we are seeing is consistent with a global temperature rise, not that the Sun is coming to our aid."

Cooler Sun = Cooler Temperatures?

Here we go again with talk on low sunspots. Consequently, “global warming’s” decline has mirrored the depression in sunspot activity. Why isn’t anyone asking the simple question: Is there a correlation between global mean temperature and solar activity? No, because that might endanger the pipedream of a CO2-driven climate system. Instead, we’re fed an unending stream of revisionist reasons on why we’ve seen such cooler temperatures—the oft mentioned “masked global warming.”

Why in the heck would anyone think that solar weather has anything to do with temperatures on Terra Firma, or any of the other planets for that matter?

The answer is YOU WOULDN’T…if you’re a news-believing moron.

Deep Solar Minimum

April 1, 2009: The sunspot cycle is behaving a little like the stock market. Just when you think it has hit bottom, it goes even lower.

2008 was a bear. There were no sunspots observed on 266 of the year's 366 days (73%). To find a year with more blank suns, you have to go all the way back to 1913, which had 311 spotless days: plot. Prompted by these numbers, some observers suggested that the solar cycle had hit bottom in 2008.

Editorial: Low sunspots equals low temperatures

Another writer points out a major problem for alarmists that we've discussed before--the Medieval Warm Period (a time of high sunspot activity). We're currently having the lowest sunspots seen since 1900. Consequently, our temperatures are cooling, much to the consternation of alarmists everywhere, who've staked their reputations and livelihoods on this global warming garbage.

Global thermometers stopped rising after 1998, and have plummeted in the last two years by more than 0.5 degrees Celsius. The 2007-2008 temperature drop was not predicted by global climate models. But it was predictable by a decline in sunspot activity since 2000.

When the sun is active, it's not uncommon to see sunspot numbers of 100 or more in a single month. Every 11 years, activity slows, and numbers briefly drop near zero. Normally sunspots return very quickly, as a new cycle begins. But this year, the start of a new cycle, the sun has been eerily quiet.

No sunspots in Aug 2008! First in 100 years!

Hey AGW-believing morons...it's real simple: Sun cools, Earth cools. Sun heats up, Earth heats up.

Interesting how we've had such a cool summer and record cold previous winter...

This is such poetic justice; writhe and wiggle, Al Gore! But remember, we skeptics are just 'seizing on a cold spell to debunk global warming.' Puh-leaze! AGW is debunking itself just fine, thank you.

DailyTech - Sun Makes History: First Spotless Month in a Century:

Drop in solar activity has potential effect for climate on earth.

The sun has reached a milestone not seen for nearly 100 years: an entire month has passed without a single visible sunspot being noted.

The event is significant as many climatologists now believe solar magnetic activity – which determines the number of sunspots -- is an influencing factor for climate on earth.

According to data from Mount Wilson Observatory, UCLA, more than an entire month has passed without a spot. The last time such an event occurred was June of 1913. Sunspot data has been collected since 1749.

When the sun is active, it's not uncommon to see sunspot numbers of 100 or more in a single month. Every 11 years, activity slows, and numbers briefly drop to near-zero. Normally sunspots return very quickly, as a new cycle begins.

But this year -- which corresponds to the start of Solar Cycle 24 -- has been extraordinarily long and quiet, with the first seven months averaging a sunspot number of only 3. August followed with none at all. The astonishing rapid drop of the past year has defied predictions, and caught nearly all astronomers by surprise.

Sunspots low - get ready for cooling

LOL! Oh please let this happen. I mean, it probably has as much validity as the predictions of us all turning into Pop Tarts due to excessive human-caused global warmth, but I must admit that it would be satisfying to further expose the fear mongers like Al Gore for the frauds they are.

Of course, the results of such a cataclysm wouldn’t be desirable (just as the effects of global warming--if it were real--wouldn't be desirable).

This isn't the first we've heard of this either (and see here and here), and he contradicts another media-trumpeted NASA scientist.

FOXNews.com - Scientist: Forget Global Warming, Prepare for New Ice Age - Science News | Science & Technology | Technology News:

Sunspot activity has not resumed up after hitting an 11-year low in March last year, raising fears that — far from warming — the globe is about to return to an Ice Age, says an Australian-American scientist.

Physicist Phil Chapman, the first native-born Australian to become an astronaut with NASA [he became an American citizen to join up, though he never went into space], said pictures from the U.S. Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) showed no spots on the sun.

He said the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7 degrees Centigrade.

Now, reputations fall like dominoes

I'm really tired of being right all the time...click the attached temperature graph and let the weeping begin. It's okay you warmaholic scientists; you can band together and maybe form your own employment agency, now that your professional reputations are in the toilet for backing a bunch of alarmist BS for so long. But, I'm sure you know this, so you'll continue ignoring the overwhelming evidence that says you've blown it, no matter if you say it's now "climate change" versus "global warming."

Wonder when or if the major news outlets will report this; probably not, since they're part of the propaganda machine which must now eat crow.

DailyTech - Temperature Monitors Report Widescale Global Cooling:

Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming

Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on.

No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age:
Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.

The U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January "was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average."

China is surviving its most brutal winter in a century. Temperatures in the normally balmy south were so low for so long that some middle-sized cities went days and even weeks without electricity because once power lines had toppled it was too cold or too icy to repair them.

There have been so many snow and ice storms in Ontario and Quebec in the past two months that the real estate market has felt the pinch as home buyers have stayed home rather than venturing out looking for new houses.

In just the first two weeks of February, Toronto received 70 cm of snow, smashing the record of 66.6 cm for the entire month set back in the pre-SUV, pre-Kyoto, pre-carbon footprint days of 1950.

And remember the Arctic Sea ice? The ice we were told so hysterically last fall had melted to its "lowest levels on record? Never mind that those records only date back as far as 1972 and that there is anthropological and geological evidence of much greater melts in the past.

The ice is back.

Baliunas, PhD, Says Global Warming Related To Sun

SunOf course, she just opened herself up to death threats from the liberal-climate-psychos (carrying silly, worm-shaped light bulbs). I'm sure they'll find a way to connect her with "BIG OIL" in order to shut her up. Kudos again to NB.

Baliunas Says Global Warming Related To Sun:

Dr. Baliunas' work with fellow Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics astronomer Willie Soon suggests global warming is more directly related to solar variability than to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, an alternative view to what's been widely publicized in the mainstream media. She also said civilizations have always looked for the cause of climate changes.

In 16th and 17th century Europe, thousands were executed for what was called "weather cooking," where religious and political institutions blamed witches - mostly women - for poor growing periods or storms.

Dr. Baliunas received her M.A. (1975) and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in Astrophysics from Harvard University. She serves as senior scientist at the George C. Marshall Institute in Washington, D.C., and chairs the Institute's Science Advisory Board.

Science shows fallacy of global warming hysteria

A friend passed along this very interesting op-ed piece originally published in The Colorado Springs Gazette in December 2007. It's written by Andres Pico, a retired naval flight officer with more than three decades of experience in applying atmospheric and space weather forecasts to land, air, sea and space-based surveillance and communications systems operations.

Here's just a taste:

In science, correlation is not causation. Sunspot records, measuring both the number of sunspots and cycle length, do correlate with climate fluctuations on Earth. Correlation does support the validation of theories and the failure of correlation, as in CO2 and temperature records, does serve to invalidate a hypothesis.

The recent work on cosmic rays triggering cloud formation is just one example of a hypothesis which is still being developed and the theory does potentially explain almost all of the climate shifts being debated.

When looking over longer periods of time, such as several thousand years, the rise in CO2 always lags warming trends by several hundred years rather than leading warming trends as it must if CO2 is the cause of warming rather than rising CO2 actually being the result of warming, which it is.
